FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can all students of St. James join the Theater Club?
The St. James Theater Club is open to all students in grades one through eight.
How does my child join the club?
Please complete and submit the registration form and play contract, and send it to school (along with the $25 registration fee) in an envelope marked “St. James Play”. These forms can be found under the “Forms” tab on the website.
What is Tech Weekend?
Tech Weekend is a run-through of the show with microphones, sound, and lights. This gives us an opportunity to work through any problems with our equipment. Tech Weekend rehearsal on that Saturday is usually a bit longer than previous rehearsals. Times will be posted as it gets closer. If there are any problem areas, we may also rehearse on Sunday of Tech Weekend.
When/where are rehearsals?
Rehearsals will start the second Saturday of January and will continue each Saturday until Tech Weekend. Saturday rehearsals take place at St. Gabriel’s Church basement. Starting in March (exact date TBA) rehearsals will be moved to the St. James Gym.
SOME cast members will have additional rehearsals, as needed. These are usually for those with larger roles. The rehearsal schedule is always updated and posted on the Theater Club website. As stated above, Tech Weekend occasionally requires both Saturday and Sunday rehearsals. We then have Dress Rehearsals on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights of the week leading up to show weekend. These rehearsals start at 6:00pm and may not end until 9:00pm.
What if a conflict arises and my child needs to miss a rehearsal?
Please email [email protected] as soon as you know of any conflicts. Please read the Attending Commitment in the Play Contract thoroughly. This details our attendance policy.
Can I help with the play?
ABSOLUTELY! We love it when parents volunteer their time. To start, we ask that all parents chaperone a minimum of three (3) rehearsals. We will also need help with stage crew, costumes, props, sound, and microphones. We will also need help during the shows.
One important thing: you must have your clearances on file with the school. If you have never gotten your clearances, there is also a Safe Environment class that all volunteers must take. Please email [email protected] for more information.
Can I stay with my child during rehearsals?
You can sit in the back of the rehearsal hall. Your child will need to be with all of the other children. There may be times when our director finds it distracting to have parents sitting in the back. If that happens, we will "close" the rehearsal to all parents except chaperones and committee members. You will be able to wait in the hallway, if you choose.
I have my own business or know someone who owns a business. Is there any way that is helpful?
It sure is! Each year, we publish a program book. Your business can run an advertisement in our book. Costs vary on the size of the ad. More information will be sent to parents soon.
Are all costumes provided?
No. We do have some costume items in storage and try our best to provide as many costume items as we can. However, there will be items that parents will need to provide. We try to keep the cost to a minimum. Information is sent to parents as soon as we know what is needed.
What about hair/make-up?
For sanitary reasons, each cast member will need their own make-up supplies. Your child should have their make-up in a small bag/container clearly marked with their name. Details on what is needed will be sent out at a later date.
We will also let you know how your child should wear their hair for the performances.
What do I do if my child is sick?
First and foremost, keep your child home so they feel better. If there is a week night rehearsal and your child misses school, they cannot attend that evening’s rehearsal. If your child is sick for a Saturday rehearsal, send an email to [email protected].
Do I need to walk my child in to the rehearsal hall?
Yes! All parents must sign-in their child/children as well as sign-out their children. Your child will not be allowed to walk out and meet you at the car.
If your child will be going home with someone else, you must provide a written note.
Can my child walk to/from rehearsal?
You must provide a written note if your child will be walking to/from rehearsals. Please know that we often have important paperwork available at the sign-in table. If your child is walking to/from rehearsal, they are responsible for getting the paperwork to you.
I heard there is a Cast Party. Can you give me some information about that?
The Cast Party is our way of celebrating everyone’s hard work to put together a great performance. After our final performance (Sunday afternoon), everyone will go home while we set up for the party. The party will start at 6:00pm and end at 8:00pm. Cast members are free, however, there is a fee for other family members (TBD at a later date). The party is catered but we do ask for help with clean-up afterwards.
I have more questions. Where can I get answers?
Please send any and all questions to Terry Barker at [email protected]. This email is checked regularly. Please don’t ever feel you can’t ask a question. We have all had questions over the years. We want you to be informed of everything involving the St. James Theater Club.
